The Lodge of St. George is a ‘Lodge’ of Freemasons established in Singapore and which meets under the supervising authority of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), the oldest Grand Lodge of ancient Freemasons in the world. We are one of the oldest lodges in Asia, having celebrated our 150th Anniversary in 2017.
The Lodge meets twelve times a year on the fourth Friday of each month, except December when we meet on the second Tuesday, at Freemasons’ Hall, 23A Coleman Street, Singapore. Our regular meetings usually start at 6.30pm and progress to a Festive Board (the name given to the dinner that follows a Masonic meeting), which is generally concluded by 10.30pm. After this, brethren are free to adjourn to the bar of The Masonic Club (TMC) to socialise further.
The Lodge of St. George is a formal dining Lodge and prides itself on maintaining its rich traditions passed down through many generations. The Lodge is characterized by its warmth and the friendship shared by our members who span all age groups, ethnic and social backgrounds: We are the “United Nations of lodges” counting many different nationalities. Indeed, at our 150th anniversary in 2017 the Lodge comprised members of 18 different nationalities, making it one of the most diverse lodges in the world. It combines a great blend of knowledge and experience with youthful enthusiasm and a desire to learn.
The Lodge of St George boasts one of the largest memberships within the DGLEA, with over 60 resident members, and over 100 in total.
Although we are part of a fraternity of Freemasons that extends around the globe, each individual Masonic lodge has its own unique culture, character and identity. We are no exception and are fiercely proud of our unique identity and history.
The Lodge of St. George is the second oldest Lodge in the Masonic District of the Eastern Archipelago (which broadly comprises Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand) and the second to be sponsored directly from London. The Petition for the formation of The Lodge of St. George No. 1152 E.C. was written in 1866 by a group of Petitioners who were primarily initiates of Zetland in the East Lodge which was consecrated in 1845, the oldest lodge in Singapore. However, the Lodge itself was sponsored by Lodge Cadogan No. 162 E.C. at a meeting in London on 19 February 1867.
The Lodge of St. George received its warrant on 22 February 1867 (in the Year of the Tiger) and was consecrated on 22 June 1867 by R.W. Bro. W.H.M. Read, the first District Grand Master of the District Grand Lodge of the Eastern Archipelago, who was a founder member of the Lodge. He installed W. Bro. Felix Henry Gottlieb as the Founder Master of the Lodge.
The Lodge of St. George has sponsored six daughter Lodges namely: Read Lodge No. 2337 in 1889 in Kuala Lumpur; Lodge St. Michael No. 2933 in 1902 in Singapore; Lodge Elliot No. 3557 in 1912 in Malacca; Johore Royal Lodge No. 3946 in 1919 in Johore Bahru; Lodge Kinabalu No. 7047 in 1951 in Kota Kinabalu; and more recently Oldham Lodge No. 9961 in Singapore. See St. George Family Tree.
Singapore’s history is full of the influences of members of The Lodge of St. George. In fact, many street names in Singapore are named after the Lodge’s members, such as Braddell Road, Dunlop Street, Napier Road, Read Bridge and Read Street in Clarke Quay.
In 2017 The Lodge achieved another milestone, its 150th anniversary.
